Chisinau. The European Union recognizes the Republic of Moldova’s striving for Europe and positively assesses the country’s efforts to enter into negotiations on an Agreement of association, says the Joint Declaration adopted in Brussels at the December 21 meeting of the EU-Moldova Cooperation Council.
According to the Government’s press service, the document welcomed the sides’ resolution to make concrete steps for creating a comprehensive trade zone. The parties stated intention to start, in 2010, a dialog on visa regime liberalization. At the beginning of next year, the European Union will delegate to Chisinau a mission to study conditions for initiating such a dialog.
In Brussels, the Council parties discussed the EU-RM cooperation in the fields of democracy, human rights, justice, freedoms and security.
According to the governmental press service, the Council welcomed the new Government’s work program and positively assessed its steps towards democratic, economic and social reforming of the country. The Council also confirmed interestedness in achieving a viable solution of the Transnistria conflict.
At a final press conference, the State Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the EU Swedish presidency, Frank Belfrage, said the Declaration is a new starting point in the EU-RM relations, which are going to be “ambitious and constructive”.
He said Moldova is on a path of democratic reforms, and expressed hope that the Filat team will manage challenges.
Moldovan Prime Minister Vlad Filat said that during this Brussels meeting, Moldova received what it desired the most – new relations with the European Union.
“In 2010, Moldova and the European Union will start negotiations on an Agreement on associated membership and on visa regime liberalization, which is extremely important”, stressed the Premier.
He voiced hope that in the foreseeable future Moldovans will come to enjoy all rights of European citizens.
