On December 23, 2009, at the Economics Studies Academy of Moldova, national experts on religious and legal issues conducted a Round-table Discussion on Church and Political Culture in the Republic of Moldova

The aim of the event was to identify the problems of interaction between CHURCH and STATE in the framework of establishing political culture in the Republic of Moldova. Also, the activity pursued two objectives:
▪ Evaluation of Christian Orthodox factor for the national identity and security of the Republic of Moldova;
▪ Evaluation of legal compatibility between national legislation of the Republic of Moldova and Orthodox Church canons in the framework of respecting freedom of religion.
This aim with objectives was achieved during conducting two discussion panels:
I. Empirical political process and Church role in the period of 1990-2009
II. Canonic limits and legal regulation of State and Church interaction.
Those discussions focused on identification of problems that the society have faced as political actors and citizens as voters and, meantime, as Christians and Church as human – divine institution.
Representatives of Church, civil society, mass-media and academic actively participated at that Round-table Discussions.
The Head of Economics Studies Academy, Grigore Belostecinic, welcomed participants and affirmed that in a modern democratic society the Church should have an important and noble role with moral-political responsibility of guiding its citizens and believers regarding family values, high morale, reciprocity respect, respect of human rights, tolerance, love of the fatherland and relatives, ecological protection, developing integral apolitical morality, which will integrally permit the society to be cohesive and indivisible in the circumstances of existence of many doctrines and parties.
The Chairman of PRISA Foundation, Valeriu Plesca, in his speech, reiterated Foundation experts’ opinion regarding importance of evaluation of legal compatibility of national legislation and Christian Orthodox Church in the framework of respecting freedom of beliefs and religion and orthodox factor in the forming political culture in society as well as their impact upon national security. Meanwhile, PRISA Foundation launched the initiative to conduct a research on the level of civil society and political class’ legal consciousness about religious-communal phenomenon in the modern state and its possible effects on national security.
During debates, the audience formulated and identifies problems of the Moldovan political culture in relations to the Church soteriological mission, different methods of tackling that problem in order to offer different resolution approaches as well as legal regulations of Church and State relationship having as a basis the principle of freedom of religion and beliefs.
Organizers of the round-table discussion expressed gratitude to the Professor Grigore Belostecininc, Head of Economics Studies Academy of Moldova for the assistance and support of that event.
